Big boy lessons

A manchild's guide to growing up.

I say it as a joke, but I half mean it. Most of who you turn into comes from the people you spend real time around, not the ones you follow online. For years I looked outside my circle for someone to model myself on. The people I actually needed were already close, I just hadn't noticed what each of them was quietly good at.

So I stopped hunting for one hero to copy. I built a small lineup instead, and took one thing from each person. Here's the lineup.

People to have in your inner circle

Six people worth keeping close, and the one thing to take from each.

The calm one

The person who doesn't flinch, and quietly teaches you that steady is a skill.

The one who calls your bluff

The person who says the true thing you've been talking yourself out of hearing.

The one who just shows up

Not flashy, not loud. Just there every time, which turns out to be everything.

The one who's been there

Already walked the road that scares you, so you don't have to guess in the dark.

The one in it with you

Same trenches, same questions. You don't grow alone, you grow next to someone.

You, in five years

Half a joke. The version of you that figured it out is worth copying too.
